The flood insurance program was established in 1968, by the federal government. It provides flood insurance to property owners in flood-prone areas. It covers almost any type of building, including single family dwellings, multiple dwellings and non residential buildings, as long as they are affixed to a permanent foundation.

The coverage provided under this type of policy are flood ("general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of normally dry land from an overflow of inland or tidal waters or a runoff of waters from any source, or flood related erosion of shorelines"), and mudslide (for a mudslide to be covered it must be considered a "general condition proximately caused by the accumulation of water on or under the ground").

A MUDSLIDE LIMITED TO A SINGLE INSURED'S PREMISE
AND NOT A GENERAL CONDITION IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
WOULD NOT BE COVRED.
